Here are a few items that may impact the total cost:
1. Your geographic location
Where do you live? Electrician labor rates can vary significantly throughout the country. Installation costs tend to be higher in big cities and major metropolitan areas.
2. Type of hardware
The cost of the charging station itself can range anywhere from $550 to $2,000 - depending on the brand, make, and/or model you choose. If you plan on buying the charging station yourself, make sure to choose one that's compatible with your electric vehicle. It's very important to do your research! How long it will take for your car to fully charge? "Fast charging" hardware is typically more expensive. How much will your utility bills increase? Is there a manufacturer's warranty?
3. Current condition of your home's electrical wiring
Most electricians recommend that your home have (at least) 200-amp service before installing an electric vehicle charging station. If you live in an older home with 100-amp service, you may need to upgrade your electric service panel before the EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment) can be installed. If you already have 200-amp service, you may not be out of the woods yet. You may still need the electrician to install a 240-volt outlet or a 40-amp circuit. Any improvements to your home's electrical system may come at an additional cost.
4. Charging station location
Where do you plan on installing the charging station hardware? In your garage? On the side of your house? The distance from your home's electrical panel (or breaker box) to the charging station will have an impact on the total cost of your project. The longer you have to run the wires, the more you can expect to pay.
5. Tax credits and incentives
Some jurisdictions offer tax incentives to people who choose to adopt this technology. Before you begin your project, do some research to see if you qualify for any of these programs. It may help to shave a few dollars off the final bill.
6. Finding an available electrician.
In most cases, charging station installation is a job for a licensed electrician. The
cost of hiring an electrician is going to vary quite a bit from city to city. Labor prices tend to be highest in large cities and lowest in rural areas. Do I have or need 200-amp service?
You may need to upgrade your breaker box before the charging station can be installed.
Do I need to install a new 240-volt outlet?
A Level 2 charging station cannot be plugged into a standard power outlet. Your electric vehicle charger will use the same type of outlet you would use for a major electric appliance (like a washing machine or refrigerator).
Should I buy a charger before I hire an installer?
We recommend consulting with your installer before deciding which one to buy. He or she can help you determine the best model for your vehicle and driving needs. If you decide to purchase on your own, make sure it is compatible with your electric car and your home’s wiring system.
Where should I install the charging station?
Charging stations can be installed both indoors and outdoors. Most electric vehicle owners choose to install the charger in close proximity to where they park the car overnight. This is usually in or near the garage, carport, or driveway.
How fast will the charger charge my car?
It can take almost 24 hours to fully charge your vehicle with a Level 1 charger. If you don’t drive very often, this might not be a problem for you. Installing a Level 2 charger is a great way to cut down on the time required to charge your car.
How much will my electricity bill go up after installing the charging station?
Ask your charging station installer if they can give you an estimate. Utility costs will vary based on how often you charge the car and where you live.
Am I eligible for any tax incentives?
Certain areas may offer tax incentives to owners of electric vehicles. Your installer may be familiar with some of these programs. Make sure to save all of your receipts during the installation process.
